Bitcoin's name might almost have been Netcoin
Bitcoin is now a global household name. However, we would not have been too close to a completely different name. At least that is the latest rumour in the history of Satoshi Nakamoto and the one and only digital currency.

A domain acquisition of Netcoin.org reveals the possible plans of bitcoin's creator. On 17 August 2008, Netcoin.org was registered. A day before that, Bitcoin.org was registered in a similar manner.

Note! Of course, this is a good dose of speculation.

The name is obviously very important for a brand. We all know bitcoin now.

But was Netcoin a better name?

Satoshi Nakamoto is the still anonymous creator of bitcoin. The protocol is now known as decentralised, open and not easily changed. But in the early days, it was really Satoshi who had to come up with the name, for example. We will never know, but bitcoin seems to be a stronger brand name than netcoin.

At the same time, of course, the revolution is not in the name. The basic rules and subsequent motivations (or incentives) have created a market worth hundreds of billions of dollars. There is a huge industry around trading, mining and plenty of other side hustles.
